Starling Rendering

Curated Art Collection

The art collection at Starling celebrates the artistic creativity found on the streets of Jersey City, from colorful murals created by artists from all over the world to the varied architecture and neighborhood life, all of which have left their mark on the city.

The art on display, be it existing works or site-specific commissions, has been made by artists who have been freed from the natural constraints preventing them from covering the city's walls and spaces with their work. Through imagination, creativity and a wide range of techniques, each artist re-imagines what the city might have looked like had they been given free artistic reign to treat it as a blank canvas.

Photography Commission
90in (2) x 55in (h)

The Mad Dog Scientist, one of BARC The Dog's recurring characters, lets loose his last experiment, BARCzilla! Bursting out of the planetarium, BARCzilla is ready to take on the world. When BARC The Dog was asked whether he would be interested in participating in this collaboration he immediately accepted and asked if he could draw on the Liberty Science Center Planetarium. Born and raised in Jersey City, he grew up visiting The Liberty Science Center on school field trips as a child, and over the years it has become a legendary place for him. He even did an illustration of the same character bursting out of the dome just a few months prior to this project, so he was eager to choose this site to "fulfill the prophecy." BARC The Dog is the creative alter-ego of Filipino multi-media artist Alexander Lansang. Using the persona of a cartoon dog, BARC The Dog weaves compelling visual narratives that transcend traditional boundaries. Through active design, distinctive color palettes, and allegorical storytelling, BARC The Dog breathes life into a multitude of scenarios. Drawing from his background as a graphic designer, coupled with his upbringing in vibrant urban environments, a deepseated love for 90s cartoons, and an affinity for street culture, BARC The Dog's work is a fusion of influences. His art explores themes as diverse as chaos and adventure, all brought to life through an array of mediums including painting, sculpture, toys, illustration, animation, and film.
